THE downturn in the oil and gas sector since the second half of 2014 has caused a lot of hardship for Malaysian petroleum professionals especially qualified geo-scientists. Many have not been employed since then and are now without a job or income.
The future continues to look gloomy as the price of oil is still in the doldrums and is expected to remain low for a while yet. Petroleum companies in Malaysia are not hiring. One of the reasons is that there are many expatriates taking up jobs that can be done by Malaysian citizens.
They are still working here even when so many locals are without jobs! Many of these expatriates have been working in our leading petroleum company for up to 21 years. Expatriates are also working in other local petroleum companies as well.
The hiring of Malaysians is also not transparent as the jobs are not advertised in local media.
It is time for the authorities like the Board of Geologists Malaysia, Human Resources Ministry and Immigration Department to work together to give priority to Malaysian workers regardless of age.
