I REFER to The MRT should be allowed to shine (Letters, Jan 12) and Connectivity counts (Letters, Jan 13) and wish to highlight a few issues at the Bandar Utama MRT station and hope that remedial action is quickly taken.
It is thoughtful of MRT to provide a free "Drop-off / Pick-up" Zone for the benefit of MRT commuters. However, it is one thing to provide it and another to barricade the parking lots.
Why barricade the parking lots to punish a few errant motorists who park their vehicles indiscriminately? Clamping these vehicles will be a far more effective solution.
Parking charges at the MRT station are rather high for an average user. Current charges are at RM4 for the first four hours and RM3 for each subsequent hour. On an average, a commuter would have to pay about RM16 just for eight hours of parking at the station bearing in mind this has not taken into consideration the fees for the train and feeder buses.
I think the high parking charges discourage commuters from leaving their cars at the station thus defeating the purpose of easing traffic flow into Kuala Lumpur.
The Bandar Utama MRT station is also a health hazard. The "Drop-off /Pick-up" Zone is swamped with mosquitoes after 5pm. If no action is taken I will not rule out a dengue outbreak.
It is a comforting thought to have officers in blue uniform going around in motorcycles to provide security at the station but sad to say that a few are rather overzealous in their actions. Besides they have the habit of parking their motorcycles indiscriminately and in many cases their bikes have partially blocked the exit at the "Drop-off/Pick-up" Zone.
I would have thought the officers in blue should be adequately briefed to "educate, guide and provide a good service" to those first-time users of MRT service.
