IN “Bus drivers need proper rest” (Comment, Jan 9) Yamin Vong has raised interesting issues questioning our regulations for long distance drivers which he hopes our “bus labs” will review.
Can we really wait for such bureaucratic labs while lives are being lost? The primary cause, fatigue, should be addressed pronto. Bus drivers must go to a designated depot after four hours of driving to be replaced by fresh drivers, for starters.
Next and most importantly, the many express services must be stopped and merged into efficient fleets so that resources are aplenty.
All recent crashes are by mosquito operators, not the fleet operators like Mara or Transnational. Proving the solution is in cutting greed in the licensing process.
Enough lives have been lost. We need to make changes NOW.
