Letters - List all NGOs

I PROPOSE that the responsible authority creates a website with a list of all the NGOs and societies in Malaysia, both registered and unregistered.

If registered, then the list of office-bearers should be displayed including the total membership and the objectives of the NGOs.

If unregistered, then just the name and known details can be made available for the public to cross check.

I am suggesting this as it seems each passing day more and more NGOs and societies are claiming to represent this and that are mushrooming and the public needs to know if these outfits are genuine or just one-man crusaders masquerading as NGOs.

If one were to follow the activities of these NGOs in the media, one will only see one person’s name repeatedly in the news, almost as if there are no other members.

A publicly available list can make it easier for the public to read, judge and make a choice whether to support the NGO.

By definition an NGO should not have any government link, if it is helmed by government ministers or office-bearers then it should not be categorised as an NGO.
