Letters - Detain ‘budgie smugglers’ indefinitely

THE arrest of nine Australians in Malaysia for stripping down to their briefs at Sunday's Formula One Malaysian Grand Prix has brought shame to Australia. It is shocking that one of the nine was the policy adviser to Christopher Pyne, Australia's defence minister. It couldn't be any worse for this first world country.

The Australian prime minister may most likely insist on the staffer's dismissal.

As visitors to our country surely they must be aware of the adage that "When in Rome do as the Romans do". Drinking beer from their shoes is weird and unhygienic.

Adding insult to injury was the fact that the briefs they were wearing were marked "budgie smugglers" emblazoned with the Malaysian flag. They could have at least worn briefs emblazoned with their own Australian flag. That could have at least been a mitigating factor.

Alcohol intoxication is no excuse. Julie Bishop, Australia's foreign minister, was honest enough to state that the whole episode was premeditated as the briefs were brought from Australia for this specific purpose.

Maybe our authorities should deem these nine uncouth Australians as "budgie smugglers" literally and detain them indefinitely until we find the budgies.
