HISTORY was created over the weekend by our three Paralympians in Rio de Janeiro. Mohd Ridzuan Mohd Puzi won gold in the 100m T36 (cerebral palsy) clocking 12.07 secs; in the shot putt F20 (intellectual disability) Muhd Ziyad Zolkefli hurled the metal ball 16.84m for a new world record; and in the men's long jump T20 (intellectual disability) Abdul Latif Romly set a new world record with a jump of 7.60m.

Our national anthem Negaraku was played three times at the Rio Paralympics and our Jalur Gemilang hoisted making our nation proud at the world stage.

This serves to remind us that nothing is impossible when we put our mind and soul into our efforts.

It was a joy too for Malaysia Paralympic Council patron Tun Jeanne Abdullah. She was delighted by the news of our three athletes creating history.

The coaches and officials in the Paralympic contingent such as chief coach K. Jaganathan played a huge role. All their hardwork and dedication has finally paid off.

Now a big reward is awaiting the gold medal winners. Naza Corporation Holdings has promised them a Kia Sportage car and residential suites worth RM350,000 each.

Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin has stated that paralympians receive the same incentives and rewards as their able bodied counterparts – the winners will receive RM1 million and a RM5,000 monthly pension for life. This is a big motivator for all athletes preparing for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Kudos to our three gold medal winners.
