KUDOS to our divers Pandelela Rinong and Cheong Jun Hoong for their magnificent silver medal win, the first diving medal for Malaysia in the women’s 10m platform synchronised. It brought cheers and smiles to the faces of fellow Malaysians at home and abroad.

Both star divers heeded their coach Yang Zhuliang’s advice to remain calm and focused on their remaining dives by scoring a total of 344.34 points after five dives at the Maria Lenk Aquatics Centre.

This is Pandelela Rinong’s second medal at the Olympics with the last one being an individual bronze at the 2012 London Olympics.

This is a massive achievement for Malaysian diving and the expectation Malaysians had on the talented pair was fulfiled after all the focus had been on Datuk Lee Chong Wei in badminton to get the ultimate gold and on Azizul Hasni Awang in cycling.

Now expectations are being raised on Pandelela Rinong to deliver a better-than-bronze medal that she won in the 10m platform diving event at the London Olympics.

Malaysians are elated with this historic win and they hope that it will spur and boost the morale of other Malaysians participating at the Rio Olympics.

It is good to witness the potential of Pandelela Rinong and Cheong Jun Hoong. They unleashed their strong mental powers and channelled it towards their desired goal of winning a medal at the highest level of sports – the Rio Olympics.
