Letters - Sceptical of CCTV plan

"BUSINESSES see red on City Hall proposal" (News, Aug 3) refers. The plans by DBKL in insisting on CCTV installation in business premises before licences are renewed is a good move.

However, I am sceptical of the true motive behind the plans.

Take the recent hike in parking rates in Kuala Lumpur; most of the collection is going to the Federal Territory Ministry staff welfare foundation and only 35% has been announced as being paid to DBKL.

The business licence renewal itself has been outsourced to a company that spent the start of this year going around business premises in KL, checking and pasting yellow labels as part of its census. I wonder how much of what we pay as business licence actually goes to DBKL.

The CCTVs in the city are being rented from third parties. Why are there so few suppliers? Why doesn't DBKL just buy them outright?

Sceptical
